Precious St. Bernard Pups Rescued from Cliff: A Tale of Compassion and Timely Aid in Action

In a thrilling and heartwarming rescue operation yesterday, a pair of 16-week-old puppies found themselves in the safe arms of three diligent search and rescue teams. The distressed pups, a mix of St. Bernard breed, had spent four consecutive days emitting plaintive cries that reached the ears of concerned locals residing near the forested area.

Emma Wilfert, who had been attentively monitoring the pups’ anguished vocalizations, expressed her observations, stating, “For the past four days, I’ve been attuned to their whimpers and cries. Their distress is evident; their howls persist from dawn till dusk.”

Pooling the efforts of eighteen volunteers, an arduous search ensued on Sunday at a precipitous cliff close to Mission. The irresistible charm of these St. Bernard-mix pups won over the rescuers’ hearts as they were gently extracted from their perilous perch overlooking Steelhead.

Dean Osen, manager of the Search and Rescue team, emphasized, “Our topmost priority is the safety of the public. We are committed to ensuring that.”

Once cradled in the arms of their saviors, the pups succumbed to their exhaustion, finding solace in deep slumber. A visit to the veterinarian ensued, revealing their fragile condition. Though the pups were gaunt and shivering due to their circumstances, they were not hypothermic and exhibited no signs of injury or parasitic infestation.

Interestingly, their trimmed nails indicated that the dogs had experienced recent care and attention, a stark contradiction to their abandonment. The tale of Duchess and Francine prompted the involvement of the BC SPCA’s animal cruelty division, who were apprised of their plight.

In gratitude for the immense support they received, the BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch conveyed, “Duchess and Francine extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who rallied behind them as they transition from mountain life. A special commendation goes to the Mission Search & Rescue Society, whose relentless dedication ensured their rescue, and to Dewdney Animal Hospital Ltd., for their vigilant care. However, as they are currently under a temporary hold, the dynamic duo is not yet available for adoption.”
