The Stone in The Village Can Grow and Move

The Stone in The Village Can Grow and Move

When scientists got into the study, they discovered the real cause of the rocks getting bigger after each rain.

There are countless types of stones in the world, their shapes are also very different. Most rocks on the outside, exposed to wind, sand, and rain over time will erode and change shape. This process may take tens or hundreds of years.

In a village of Costesti in Romania, the rocks here are very strange, they grow every day and even "grow feet" on rainy days. It's called Trovant stone.

It is known that the magic stones in this village will grow bigger every time it rains. Some of the stones were very small before, but over the years, they became bigger, like a small rocky mountain.

Trovant stones not only enlarge when "drinking water" but can also "grow feet" to move afterwards. When it rains heavily, the rocks here will move in a certain direction, leaving no trace. This strange thing has made many people come to Costesti village to see.

A number of experts and scholars, upon hearing this news, came here to verify. They want to use scientific methods to solve the mystery of what makes these stones grow.

They found a stone and began using professional equipment to split it in half. After cutting and clearly seeing the structure inside the stone, experts said, it is not like an ordinary stone but more like the structure of a tree.

There are many circular and elliptical veins inside the stone. Experts surmise that it is because of these strange ridges and structures that the stones absorb water and grow after rains.

It is known that water is rich in minerals, calcium carbonate in rainwater is considered the key to making rocks grow.

After each heavy rain, Trovant rock will absorb calcium carbonate and combine with existing sediment layers to form a deposition layer over time. Just like that, the small stones are accumulated in layers and grown after the rains.

Trovant is a synonym for the German term “Sandsteinkonkretionen”, which means cement sand. They are believed to be a type of sandstone that exudes cement and can sometimes grow as if it were alive. These "living stones" consist of a rock core with an outer shell of sand.

There is little research on the origins of these growing stones in Romania. Many theories have been put forward and some of them are even considered illusory.

According to the International Geological Congress conducted in Oslo 2008, these Trovant stones are incorrectly referred to as "sandstone concrete".

The study of these Trovants began in the Carpathians around 1883 (Cobalcescu) and it was not until 1900 that an opinion on their origin was made.

It is believed that perfectly spherical Trovants were found due to the intensity and duration of the paleontology. For the growth of these "living stones", certain stones may gradually get a little larger due to water absorption. In this case, the accumulation and deposition of minerals bounded by calcium carbonate rich water is the reason.

The "living stones" in the village of Costesti seem to be growing every day. As a result, the site has become a tourist attraction for Romania.

To protect these unusual geological formations, the “Muzeul Trovantilor” nature reserve or Trovants Museum was built in 2004 and is now protected by UNESCO.
