History of Paraty Town

No visit to the town of Paraty is complete without immersing yourself in the local history. Because this was once one of the most important cities during the Portuguese colonial period. The town was founded by the Portuguese in 1597 and named after the local indigenous name for the bay it overlooks ra. In the past, this place was a colonial backwater for nearly a century, but in the 17th century, when gold mines were discovered inland, Paraty suddenly became famous.

The roads built in the town were almost all connected to gold mining sites, transporting precious metals to the port Rio de Janeiro and from there to Portugal.

However, when the gold mines dried up, i.e. in the 18th century, the town falled into decline and it was only recently thanks to tourism and interest in well-preserved colonial architecture that Paraty found its way back to life. my position.
