Pianosa Island is an undeveloped tourist island

Geologically, this is the only flat and barren island of the Tuscan archipelago: the main point is only 20 meters high, so its temperature is always higher than the other islands. Pianosa is flat with a coastline of just 22 kilometers, boasting stunning cliffs and breathtaking snorkeling sites. Today, the island is uninhabited, but is teeming with Italian marine life in the marine reserve, as well as migratory birds and small land mammals instead. Ruined buildings make up most of the tourist attractions, with intact city walls, gates and towers providing dramatic, picturesque backdrops.

To visit the island of Pianosa, you can take a boat from the ports of Marina di Campo, Marciana Marina and Porto Azzurro. As an Italian tourist attraction, the island can be visited in limited numbers and through guided tours for a fee, so a tour reservation is required.

The island was first inhabited at the end of the Stone Age. The remaining Roman ruins are a villa, theater and catacombs. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Pisa and Genoa vied for rights to the island due to its strategic location off its coast. The only residents are a few policemen, a guard's family, and two or three convicts on probation. All that stands out is the prison and prison museum, a few Roman houses, restaurants, and ruins. As a result, the whole island gives the feel of a ghost town and can be quite spooky.

Ruins of ancient buildings on the island

The island is protected from environmental change and destruction. Only sustainable development and care for the environment, historical and artistic heritage are allowed to be closely monitored. Transport and fishing are not allowed within one mile of the coast.

These factors make Pianosa Island an extremely peaceful place with intact natural beauty. The unique unspoiled landscape and man-made structures are fascinating remnants of history. The ocean floor provides a diverse marine environment with water plants such as Posidonia oceanica and fish species such as giant pipefish, salemas fish, common tuna, striped mullet, barramundi, morays, lobster, tiger amber and grouper…

The only port on the island to bring tourists to visit

This cruise allows you to admire the seabed completely pristine and will have the pleasure of seeing a marine flora and fauna along the shore which has been specially selected by the Management for its unique beauty.

Since Pianosa Island is practically uninhabited the future of the island is quite uncertain. There are concerns about some of the houses on the island, built when the island was an agricultural colony that are now witnesses to the island's history. Some buildings have been restored but they still need ongoing maintenance as they are built of local stone that is susceptible to corrosion. Losing these buildings would mean losing Pianosa's history, but it also doesn't take a lot of manpower to make sure they're always in good condition.
